The South West of France is a traditionally festive and colorful region; red and white are the typical colors of the Landes and Basque “Ferias” taking place from June to August.

Many festivities are laid on for the 100,000 or so “festoyares” present for the Bayonne Fêtes, all clad in white with red berets, belts and neckerchiefs. Some of the highlights consist of Course de Vachette (cow rodeo), climbing on a 5 meter pole in front of the Hotel de Ville, bandas playing some music while crossing the most crowded streets, etc.

When the tradition started in 1932, festoyares were dressed in white and blue clothes reminiscent of the traditional “bleu de travail” or pants worn by workers. These colors were later replaced by red and white, the official colors of the Pamplona festivities or « Sanfermines » in the Spanish Basque Country. Green is also associated with the Ferias as one of the three colors of the Basque flag: white, red and green.

The Houston Accueil members will share this tradition with you during an evening of traditional food and dancing.

Dress code: a white shirt or tee-shirt, white pants, a red neckerchief and a red belt.
